It is the end of August! What the heck? How did this happen and how quickly did the time go? I swear it was just the start of the year and really in the end we are heading into the end of a year and the holiday season is knocking on our doors which means it is going to fly by. That all means that the 10 months that Elder Garcia has left on his mission will be gone before we know it. Today, Elder Garcia and I had a chance to catch up after Kaitlyn had left for work and Brooklyn headed out the door for school. Tyler was off hunting so it was just the two of us on the call today. Some highlights from today: - Elder Garcia and another companion have built a brick oven and are hopeful that this will allow them to cook a pizza (there aren't ovens in Africa so he is pretty excited about this) - Elder Garcia had, I think he said 18, total ties made for his friends here at home as a gift for when they return home from their missions.  - Elder Garcia had matching ties made for the Elders i...

Week 63 Email: Exchanges and Rain Again

Image
From: Christian.garcia@missionary.org Date: Monday, August 29, 2022 Subject: Exchanges and Rain Again Bonjour tout le monde!! I hope that all of you have had a good week and that school and everything was good this week. This week I did an exchange and all of the sudden the rain started up again... Togo weather is almost as bizzare as Utah's haha.  To start off this week we had our first District Council of the transfer and I am really excited for this district. We had a really good week in doing the work 2 weeks ago (the 1st week of the transfer) and I saw that everyone is ready to keep it up. We talked a lot about how it is that we present ourselves to our friends and what kind of questions we could and should ask to help understand what it is that the amis need and want to learn by talking with us. We were also able to apply that to our lessons this week too! I saw so many times that when we did that too, people were more willing to have us come back and they seemed ...

From: Mom To: Christian.garcia@missionary.org Date: Saturday, August 27, 2022 Subject: August is ending Happy Saturday evening. How are you? How was your week? Things this week here at home were full and busy. Getting back into routine with school has been great but you forget how much go go go it adds to life too. I’m grateful Brooklyn has friends and is always off doing something but it will be super nice when she can drive herself too. Brooklyn decided not to try out for the middle school volleyball team and she seems good with that choice. I think in the end she just didn’t want to have an off chance of missing out on football games or anything like that. She has been to the freshman football games and she spent most of her afternoon on Friday watching the freshman, jv, and varsity volleyball teams play at the high school. It is sure fun to see her embracing the high school life even if I am not sure I’m ready for her to grow up. Kaitlyn started work and has been a...

Week 62 Email: Transfers and Such

Image
From: Christian.garcia@missionary.org Date: Monday, August 22, 2022 Subject: Transfers and Such Bonjour tout le monde! I hope that you have had a great week and that you have learned something! I know that I have and that we are vibing over here in Togo.  So this last week I got a new companion from the Congo. His name is Elder Kamata (kah-mah-tah) and he is a freaking legend! He was up in this sector called Tabligbo where there were so many people looking for the gospel. Here in Africa there is always a lot but up there it's like "the promised land." Anyways, when he got here the first thing that we did was an inventory of our amis and then made the decision to go out and do some finding. So we went to the lessons, with the bikes, and then we went and tried to find lots of people to just talk to. We ended up talking to some cool people and had a really awesome lesson yesterday (more on that later).  I also had to say goodbye to Elder Proffit, he's up in...

Monday calls :) I swear our weeks are flying by! It was just yesterday that we talked I am almost sure of it but in reality...a whole other week has come and gone.  Elder Garcia was in good spirits today when we talked. He was happy and was excited to tell me all about what this last week looked like. Some highlights this week are: - Elder Kamata and Elder Garcia are a great companionship. Elder Garcia says that Elder Kamata is a hard hard worker and is a go getter. So because of this, they are out working in the sector for long days and they are seeing the successes of this hard work too. Elder Garcia is loving the work ethic and the drive that Elder Kamata has brought to the apartment.  - Elder Garcia and Elder Kamata are both bicycle riders! This means they get to go out to sector and stay out there for longer because using a bicycle means they don't take as long to get back to the apartment.  - There were oodles of inactive members that joined them at church yesterday...

From: Mom To: Christian.garcia@missionary.org Date: Saturday, August 20, 2022 Subject: Rainy days Hey kiddo How are you? How has your week been? How are things going with your new companion? Does he get along well in the apartment and is the flow still going well? This week has been fine here at home. Nice to get back into the routine of things with school. Brooklyn was so not excited about starting but the Fathers Blessing that Tyler gave her on Wednesday night was so sweet and tender and just what she needed. By the time she got up on Thursday she was ready and looking forward to going. We don't really love the later start of the days and she really hates that there are only 2 lunches because it makes it jam packed with people, but we survived and she is excited I think for this year. :) Tyler got up on Thursday and loaded up to head to Beaver. The archery hunt opened today so he went down and set up camp and spent two days glassing the mountain to ready for this mor...

Week 61 Email: Exchanges and Transfers

Image
From: Christian.garcia@missionary.org Date: Monday, August 15, 2022 Subject: Exchanges and Transfers Bonjour tout le monde! Comment vous-allez? I really hope that you guys are doing well. This week we found out transfer news and I did some exhanges. And as usual I didn't take many pictures haha, the ones that I have though I will attach them. This week we started off with me doing an exchange with Elder Tumuteke. He is in the sector of Apedokoe (ah-peh-doe-quai) and it's the end of the transfer so I thought that we could do an exchange together before the transfer ends. We went up to my sector Sanguera (zan-gayr-uh) and we got to use the bikes! Over this past transfer we haven't been able to use them because my companion has a little difficulty with them but we still can walk so that's something. And it's weird to me saying this but I really missed being able to use the bikes. I didn't think that would be the case after Kpalime but I definately did h...

This week we got to have Tyler jump in on a call with us which always makes for fun. :) I was outside with Teeter and he came out and wanted to listen in and share some thoughts with Elder Garcia. Some of the things that Elder Garcia shared this week are: - Transfer news came in and he is staying in his same sector again. He is getting a new companion and he is looking forward to getting to know him better. He is also super stoked to be staying where he is - We talked a little more about school for when he gets home and have learned that we don't need to put much thought and effort into it just yet. He will hit 14 months next week so at the start of the year to mid March or so we will take a look at what he will need - We talked a lot about trying to capture the mission for those of us here at home and those that are reading his emails each week. I told him that when people ask me how he is and how his mission is going, I have to just say "He seems happy and he is still in Afr...

From: Mom To: Christian.garcia@missionary.org Date: Sunday, August 14, 2022 Subject: Back to school week Well…it’s here. And we are not excited about it one but. School will officially start again on Thursday which means this has been a mast week of fun and a weekend to cram it all in. We started the week with Teeter getting spayed. She did ok but the recovery has proven difficult. Her wound won’t shut and so it is still leaking. The vet keeps telling me to keep her ‘still’ and inactive but she is a puppy and it’s hard to keep her low key. They don’t want her running or jumping and she does all of those. It’s hard. I imagine I will be back at the vet tomorrow to see if we can do anything. I feel so bad for her. Kaitlyn had a phone interview this week with the eye doctor and she has another one with Granger Medical on Monday. She also figured out what she needs to do to register at SLCC for school that starts on the 23rd. She is full on adulting. She met up with Nate Duva...
